My research into the Guanghzhou dining scene was not revealing much in the way of modern, middle of the road restaurants until I came across Social & Co and it was exactly what I was hoping to find. The space is modern, bistro-style over two storeys with mezzanine and open at the front to allow the breeze. Staff were friendly and attentive but not overly so.

When we sat down, they were very quick to tell us that it was only 5 minutes until happy hour ended so we should order our first drink quickly – they didn’t have to tell us and we would easily have missed out. The usual beers were available and the wine list had a nice selection. I had a lovely glass (or two) or rose but I could easily have gone for a pinot noir which is not always available by the glass.

Given the relaxed feel of the place, we chose to eat – lovely menu, it was difficult to chose. Garlic Prawns are always a winner and this version had a nice chilli bite but wasn’t overpowered by the garlic. 3 Little Pigs, a collection of pork bits, was a little fatty for my liking but still very tasty. Seared Scallops were plump and full of flavour, served on a fresh apple and fennel salad. Servings were not small and delivery of food was nicely timed.

The only negative I can come up with is seating – there were a selection of seats but mine was a bistro style chair and I found it quite uncomfortable. Having said that, it’s not the most uncomfortable I’ve had and I will definitely return.
