Danny’s Restaurant – Bangrak, Koh Samui, Thailand

We stopped here for a light dinner following a recommendation from a local and were immediately glad we did. The open space is nicely decorated, small but relaxed, clean and comfortable. The welcome is warm and there was a lovely breeze coming through from the restaurants across the road. It is situated on a busy road but the traffic isn’t really a bother, just part of the experience.
First priority… we had heard that the mojitos are good so I ordered the strawberry version – fantastic! This one was full of tasty fruit (pretty sure there was no syrup here) and fresh mint, not too sweet and nicely presented in a mason jar. There were many cocktails to choose from and on this occasion they were only 99bt (not sure if that’s always the case but I will certainly be going back to check). And apparently the beer was cold!
The food is a mix of Thai and Burmese and menus are scattered around the room on blackboards. After having a hard time choosing, we settled on four dishes: tea leaf salad; prawns with broccoli; chicken with fried basil; steamed rice. All were delicious but the tea leaf salad was a big winner for us. Cabbage based with a handful of tomato chunks, crunchy peanuts and a delicious dressing which, if I understood correctly, is made from marinated tea leaves – not at all oily but strangely creamy with no cream in sight. Being a Burmese dish, it still works well with the Thai dishes but with different flavours. Both the chicken and the prawns were fresh and tasty, not drowning in sauce but more than enough for a small serve of rice. The four dishes were more than enough for two people and cost was minimal (approx. 350bt).
Blink and you’ll miss it. Signage isn’t huge so head just north of the entrance to the Big Buddha, opposite the Brothers restaurant/bar, it’s on the corner of a small soi (under the sign to the Shakespeare Pub). Definitely worth looking for.
Update: Went back for a takeaway tomato salad today for lunch and it was delicious too. Sliced chunks of tomato with a delicious peanut sauce (not satay but yum!). The tempura squid is also a winner – crispy on the outside with tender, generous sized squid pieces.
