Looking for something nice for our last night in Beijing and having eaten at M on The Bund (in Shanghai), this was an obvious choice for us. It’s in an amazing spot, right opposite Tiananmen Square and the view at night is superb. When we visited, it was too cold to make use of the outside space but I can just imagine how beautiful it would be to sit there with a glass of wine and watch the city light up.

Instead we sat inside the glass and that was almost as good! The space is dimly lit but not too dark with a few ‘fire places’ scattered around for ambience.

The welcome and service was friendly and efficient. Staff were always around but not hovering and when we were ready to leave, they made sure to find us a taxi and went to great lengths to ensure he knew where to go (even though he got lost anyway!). We started with cocktails and it was lovely to see a selection of classics with a slight twist – we had a not too spicy Bloody Maria and a Smoky Manhattan. Starters, salads and mains provided plenty of choice and between us we had the freshwater salmon, salad with gorgonzola, suckling pig and cheese soufflé. We both found the food needed a little more salt but that’s personal choice. While we agreed that all were pleasant, there were no ‘wow’ moments but we certainly had no complaints.

I’m surprised there isn’t more choice at the top end of the dining scene in Beijing but I would still be happy to return to Capital M for another sample.
