Looking for something nice for our last night in Beijing and having eaten at M on The Bund (in Shanghai), this was an obvious choice for us. It’s in an amazing spot, right opposite Tiananmen Square and the view at night is superb. When we visited, it was too cold to make use of the outside space but I can just imagine how beautiful it would be to sit there with a glass of wine and watch the city light up.

After deciding to do a stopover in Beijing, we specifically looked for accommodation with some character and local flavour. Double Happiness didn’t disappoint. When we arrived, our room category was overbooked but the staff went out of their way to sort the problem and as they were open and honest with us, we were more than happy to assist.

Being one of only four municipalities in China (reporting directly to the Government rather than being part of a province), you would think there is something special about Chongqing. That could possibly be true but I can’t say I saw it. Surrounded by mountains, it’s located in the southwest of the country at the meeting point of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers.

Staff are by far the best thing about the Hilton Chongqing. It’s in a strange location but not at all difficult as the metro is only a 5 minute walk. Certainly one of their older properties and even though it was obviously well built in its day, it is starting to show signs of wear.

This was my first time to Guangzhou but my husbands 5th and his 3rd time at The Leeden Hotel. He originally chose this hotel based on its affiliation with the International Import Export Fair and availability of shuttle buses. Now being familiar with the city’s transport network, the shuttle buses are no longer a high priority but The Leeden is still his preferred choice.

My research into the Guanghzhou dining scene was not revealing much in the way of modern, middle of the road restaurants until I came across Social & Co and it was exactly what I was hoping to find. The space is modern, bistro-style over two storeys with mezzanine and open at the front to allow the breeze. Staff were friendly and attentive but not overly so.

Guangzhou (previously Canton) is China’s third largest city and a major port but it’s not a nasty, heaving metropolis. It’s clean, green, easy to move around. Traffic can be heavy at peak times but it has an uncrowded feel. Strangely, there don’t seem to be any birds or animals of any type – even cockroaches! In fact, it feels a little eerie at times.

Being on the 99th floor of the IFC building with views across Guangzhou, there was never a chance this wasn’t going to be jaw-dropping. The stunning bar dominates the entrance and inside the atmosphere is dark and moody (we arrived around 6.00pm on an overcast evening). Background music was well chosen and not too loud to prevent conversation.

Looking for breakfast on a rainy morning, we decided to give the Tailor’s Workshop a try and we weren’t disappointed. Being at the end of the busy Beaumont Street strip, parking was easy and the dismal weather meant street-side dining was out, but inside was warm and cosy with a bit of an old-school Mediterranean vibe.

Great location, terrible service
Just on the fringe of the restaurant and shopping district, and at the base of the Menara Tower, we chose the Oasia Suites based on location and were not disappointed in this respect. The property was clean and quiet, our two bedroom apartment was well laid out and nicely decorated, beds were comfortable but unfortunately that where the positives ended.
