We had a function in Newcastle recently so given the location of The Grand Hotel and the many positive reviews online, it was an easy choice.  We weren’t disappointed.  There are many different room categories and the level of amenities relates to the price (as you would expect) with some rooms larger, sharing facilities, etc.

On Saturday, we hosted a lunch celebration at Restaurant Mason with 40 of my nearest and dearest.  It was superb in every aspect.  Instantly upon arrival, guests were welcomed with a glass of champagne in the sunshine, gifts were taken care of with discretion, canapes were served and every need was taken care of.

Last week I was whisked away for lunch in the Hunter Valley to celebrate a milestone birthday.  When we turned into Cessnock Airport, I was a tad concerned but it turned out I was to have my first helicopter flight (not my initial fear of a skydive!).  After a little safety briefing, our pilot, Oliver, took photos and we were quickly on our way.

I try to keep up with the restaurant happenings in the Hunter Valley but I missed this one and what a pleasant surprise it is!  Located at the Cockfighter’s Ghost Vineyard on De Beyers Road, it’s elegant without being too fussy.  A relaxed space with pleasantly professional service.

14 days, 11 beds, 2 sleeping bags,

Day 1: Newcastle – Hobart via Melbourne (3hr flying, 4hr waiting!)

It’s been a while since I’ve flown Jetstar but I’m pleased to report that today’s service was seamless on both flights – smooth check in, comfortable seating (row 1 never disappoints) and no delays.  The self-check in and bag drop service has definitely improved since the last time I used it.  Our wait at Melbourne airport was painless with plenty of seating available and food options to please even the pickiest palates.

Beautiful people, amazing food & hours of stunning scenery.

10 days, 9 beds, 3 apartments, 1 cabin, 2 motels, 1 villa, 2 flights (1 shower in the sky!) & 1,810km driving (in 23 hours, 50 minutes)

Day 1: Sydney – Auckland (3hr, 30min)

Yes, we flew first class (thank you Frequent Flyer points!) and yes, I probably would pay real dollars for it because Emirates rocks!  Comfort, service, food/wine offerings – all are outstanding.  And no, I didn’t use the shower… on the first flight!

A terrific little place! Warm welcome, clean and modern furnishings with a well stocked little kitchenette. Firm bed, crisp sheets and soft pillows, fluffy towels and boutique toiletries are not normally something I would associate with a motor lodge so lots of bonus points here. It’s a long walk to shops or restaurants but it is quiet and taxis are easy to get if you choose to have a few drinks.

Exactly as stated – trendy, waterfront apartment. Compact, modern with a nice little sitting area and well located, overlooking the Viaduct so lovely views and close to everything. Great for us as we were in town to socialise but the noise from revellers at night could be a little disturbing for some. It had everything we needed – iron, hair dryer, glasses, coffee/tea.

With almost 12 million people, the capital of the People’s Republic of China is the world’s third largest city in terms of population.  Even so, I was surprised that it didn’t feel crowded (except for that one evening on the metro…).  Parks, tree-lined streets and massive cultural sites all give the city an open feeling.
