The Regent – Cha-am, Phetchaburi, Thailand

We were looking for a stopover on our way up the coast when we came across The Regent Cha-am. It was a huge bargain so we figured the property was either getting tired, having renovations or empty. It turned out it was the first two. That’s not necessarily a negative though – it’s still The Regent.

Everything was clean and well maintained, just a bit dated and I’m sure they have big plans because they’re already starting work on some of the public spaces including restoration of the beachfront. We arrived earlier than expected (before 12pm) so we didn’t expect our rooms to be ready but we were greeted warmly at reception and to our surprise we were given two rooms on the top floor with stunning views of the beach. Bathrooms are practical, all the usual 5 star amenities are available, beds are comfortable and there’s a pillow menu (bonus!!). Large balconies (with fly screens on doors!) are perfect for watching the day fade. Wifi works well in the rooms and all public areas. The pools (2) were delightful, plenty of lounge chairs when we were there. We didn’t eat dinner at the resort but breakfast was a tasty buffet with the normal western and Asian treats but watch out for the birds if you sit outside – they’re very brave. If you don’t like to spend all of your time in the resort, there are a number of small restaurants and bars a short distance down the beach and on the road.

I would definitely recommend The Regent for a stay but if it’s more than a night or two, just check how much work is planned at the time.
