Tamu Beach Resort – Otres 2, Sihanoukville, Cambodia

We’ve been looking forward to experiencing Sihanoukville for some time and after loads of research, I’m confident that we chose our base well. The transfer from Phnom Penh (arranged by Tamu) was approximately 3 hours for us. With trucks, tractors, motorbikes and livestock using the same road, it’s an interesting drive.
Otres Beach is about 15 minutes out of Sihanoukville but a world away in terms of atmosphere. The beach is a few kilometres long, clean with white sand and mostly gentle water. The northern end is known as Otres 1, many bungalow/restaurant/bar operations can be found here and while most of these operations can best be described as ‘backpacker’ level, it is a good spot for a casual lunch or a cocktail. Otres 2 (at the southern end) is the nicer area with more boutique style operations of which Tamu is the standout.
Tamu is a small resort style property with the rooms set around a central pool and a restaurant on the beach. The feel is light and airy not dark and damp. I would describe the design of the property as island minimalist, predominantly white with lots of polished concrete but softened by thatched roofs and lush gardens. All are maintained well. Sunbeds and lounges are provided on the beach with thick, comfortable cushions that are clean and not grungy! Huge beach towels are provided fresh each day.
We stayed in the suite which is upstairs (above reception) with a wide balcony that looks over the pool and beyond to the beach. The largest of the rooms, it was planned well with a separate bathroom and toilet, comfortable bed and plenty of chairs to relax. The only thing I would change is the location of the air conditioner which tends to blow onto the bed but we managed to convince it into a spot that was workable so definitely not a big deal. The room also has a fan which we often prefer – it’s nice to have the option.
A relaxed breakfast is served in the restaurant from 7.00am until 10.30am and guests are welcome to sit and graze (or drink the delicious coffee!). A small al a carte menu offers the usual eggs/bacon/tomato options and a buffet is also provided with fruit, toast, fresh juices, etc. At lunch and dinner, the menu covers Khmer favourites and fresh salads but also includes a few different options – the scallop linguine was tasty with loads of meaty scallops, the prawn and cucumber salad was also generous, fresh and just a little spicy.
While the property itself is wonderful, it’s the staff that really make Tamu stand out from the rest. Stylish in variations of black outfits and accessorised by their constant smiles, they are friendly, efficient, helpful and keen to expand their language skills. Reception is welcoming and quick to answer questions or assist with options for day trips. The restaurant staff make a solid effort to know each guest’s name and use it whenever possible. Throughout the day, they are always available but never intrusive, bringing drinks and food to the beach if required. It seems that the Tamu family is happy and their team spirit is strong.
Congratulations to management on building a beautiful environment. We haven’t left yet but we already look forward to our return.
